Do you ever have those moments where something or someone puts you in your place and makes you sit back and go “whoa.” I had one of those moments the other day. I have always been amazed by others who never let anything hold them back whether they’re in a wheelchair, disabled or whatever could possibly hold them back if they let it.
The other day I was almost done working out and I decided to hit up the gym to shoot some basketball before I headed home because it always helps me clear my head and concentrate. As I went to pick up a ball there was a kid in a wheelchair just sitting there and I said “hey, kiddo how are ya?” With his adorable blue eyes he looked at me and smiled saying “I’m good, how bout I beat you at a game of basketball?” I loved the kids determination and the competitiveness in me of course said “sure!” We played a game of HORSE. This kid was good let me say and gave me a run for my money but I sat back and just watched him as he smiled with joy in his eyes as he shot the ball. It was an amazing feeling watching this kid shoot like he was a pro and not thinking twice about it.
He asked me “are you not going to ask me how I got to be in a wheelchair?” And I just nodded to him saying “well if you want to share with me I’d love to listen.” He started telling me what happened and basically he and his mom were driving one day when a large SUV slammed into their car causing him to be paralyzed from the waist down. Ironically they were headed to his basketball game. I just sat there as talked about it and I thought why do things like this happen to kids like this but at the same time I saw such an amazing thing inside of him that you don’t always see in kids, especially at that age too. Basketball makes him happy and he is determined to be the best player he can be despite the wheelchair. I not only had a blast with this kid and made a new friend but also I was reminded just how much you can’t take things for granted.
Don’t be afraid to go after what you want even when you’re going against the odds. Nothing can stop you if you have the determination and heart.
